Answer
NOTE: keep in mind that unless you group or sort columns within the editor, the changes will not stick when viewing them. Therefore, if you always want certain columns grouped or sorted, make sure to make these changes within the report editor.
Sorting
You can sort a column by clicking the column name in the report editor or viewer. This will sort the column in alphabetical or reverse alphabetical order (if it is non-numerical) or by descending/ascending order (if it is numerical).

The grouping formatting does not export to Excel
You can group a report by a column by dragging the column header to the top of the report (see image below). In this example image we would be grouping a report by Supervisors.
