Data Import Tool error

Issue

  • I am having issues mass uploading my contacts with the Data Import Tool and am receiving an error.
  • My contacts are failing to mass upload.
  • "The file you have uploaded does not match the provided template."  error after uploading the contact spreadsheet.

Import errors

Sometimes the import tool can encounter an error. These errors are often due to the template formatting issues listed below. If some of your contacts failed, you can download the failed records by going to Administration > Company Settings > Data Import Tool > View History > Download Failed Records. From there, check to see if those records have any of the following issues:

  • Contacts in your template are missing required fields (see the manual for a list of the required fields and ensure that every contact has the required fields filled out)
  • Duplicate contacts. Make sure you do not have any duplicates on the spreadsheet and that they do not already exist in your DASH contact management system.
  • Only 2,000 contacts can be imported at once. If you have more than this in one template, break your template up into batches.
  • Ensure that the "Company Type" or "Contact Type" matches the company/contact type options that are in your DASH environment. If they do not match, the upload can fail. You can see what contact types your company has by simply navigating to the Contact Manager, creating a new contact, and viewing what options are in the Contact / Company Type dropdown.
  • The columns/headers are in the same order that they were in from the original template downloaded from your DASH environment.
  • Check for any fields (ex: Contact Type, Contact Category, etc) which seem to be excessively long or have a lot of characters. Some contact fields in DASH have character limits.
  • The headers of your template were altered and do not match the original template. That will cause this error - "The file you have uploaded does not match the provided template." error when using Data Import

"The file you have uploaded does not match the provided template."

This issue typically stems from adjustments being made to the header row on the template. Make sure the headers of the file you have uploaded match the headers of the original template file (see this page for instructions on how to find the templates -- Data Import Tool guide).

The easiest way to fix any changes to the header row is to download the template, copy the entire header row, and paste it over the header row in the template.
