"Could not start QuickBooks" error in Dash Account 4

Issue

  • Error received when running Dash Account 4 (DA4) for QuickBooks Desktop (QBD)
  • "Could Not Start QuickBooks" error

Solution

This error has a few different causes. Go through each step listed below to resolve the issue:

  1. Multiple QuickBooks Desktop processes may be running in the background of your machine:
    1. Open your Task Manager by pressing CTRL + ALT + DELETE on your machine.
    2. Check the Details tab of task manager and close all instances of QB.exe, re-open QuickBooks, and then try to use DASH Account 4 again.
  2. Ensure your DA4 console is connected to the correct QuickBooks file, if you still receive an error after step #1:
    1. First, obtain the correct file path in QuickBooks: Open QuickBooks Desktop and log in to your QBD profile > press F2 on your keyboard to open the popup window > copy and paste the file path (refer to the image below for an example)
    2. Open Dash Account 4 console on your computer or remote server
    3. Click on Profile > Edit Profile
    4. Paste the file path here and click Next. Avoid using "Browse.." and instead obtain the file path directly from QBD to minimize potential issues (refer to step a. above for guidance)
    5. Try using DA4 again and see if you still get the error.
  3. If you still receive the error after updating the file path (step #2), check to see if the QuickBooks Desktop and/or the Dash Account 4 applications are running as an elevated program in Windows. See these 3rd party articles to learn more about how to do this on your machine:
  4. Are you using a server/cloud based workstation (ex: Citrix Receiver)?
    • Try closing all apps on your machine, close the server workstation, and restart the server workstation.
    • After the server workstation starts back up open QuickBooks Desktop FIRST then open Dash Account 4.
  5. Have you recently upgraded your QuickBooks Desktop application?
    • Make sure that any prior version of QuickBooks Desktop has been uninstalled from your machine and that only the recent version is installed.
